Dear Parent/Guardian of 10th Grade STMHS students:

We are proud to announce that, for the SEVENTH year, we will be partnering with the United States Coast Guard Academy to hold our Project SPIL. SPIL is an acronym for ‘Science Partnership for Innovation in Learning’. This program, created with the United States Coast Guard Academy, is focused on 10th grade students at the Science & Technology Magnet School. This highly successful program allows our students to experience college science courses firsthand. As an STMHS student, participation in prestigious programs such as this one is strongly encouraged. In addition, participating in this program will provide students 12 hours towards their required 60 hours of academic enrichment activities necessary for graduation.

On Monday, February 22, 2016, there will be a mandatory orientation dinner. Students who participate are required to attend this event with their parents. This dinner is held at the United States Coast Guard Leamy Hall, at 6:30 p.m. At this event, students will participate in team building exercises with parents and Coast Guard staff, as well as register for two science courses that they will take at the USCGA during a school day. The classes include oceanography, chemistry, physics, and environmental science to name just a few. Their day at the Academy will include a light breakfast, their chosen classes, lunch and then an activity where students report on their experiences by creating posters, videos, and written reports. These visits will be on February 29th, March 16th or March 23rd. Their projects will be presented during the Project SPIL Capstone Session held on April 2nd at the USCGA. Parents are encouraged to attend this event.

In order for your child to participate, you must call or email my secretary, Stephanie Zauner at 860-437-6496 x7399; to pre-register for the mandatory dinner Orientation. A permission slip for the classes is enclosed. Please have your child return the completed permission slip to the STMHS main office. Reservations will be accepted through Wednesday, February 17th

Our students who attended last year felt this was an extremely rewarding and exciting opportunity. We hope you will take advantage and register your child for participation in this program.

Best regards,

Laurelle Texidor
