Before New London Public Schools opened its doors for the 2014-15 school year, students in Connecticut College’s Class of 2018 visited the Science and Technology Magnet High School of Southeastern Connecticut (STMHS) to complete their first community learning project.

The community learning project is an important part of the Connecticut College 1st Year Student Orientation. The mission of Connecticut College is to educate students to put the liberal arts into action as citizens in a global society. Valuing community engagement and active citizenship, the college’s Office of Volunteers for Community Service (OVCS) organized 530 students last Saturday and deployed them by bus to 12 community partner sites –including the STMHS and two other New London elementary schools.

Connecticut College students cleaned up any brush and garbage on school grounds in addition to the athletic fields near the school.

“We also had a nice discussion with them and talked to them about their careers and we’re brainstorming future connections in terms of internships and mentoring our students,” Director Laurelle Texidor said.

In addition, Connecticut College Chemistry Professor Marc Zimmer joined his group of first year seminar students at STMHS on Saturday and said he is looking forward to other partnership activities. 

Another team of Connecticut College students also attended the Back to School Block party at Jennings Elementary School. The event, which was hosted by Miracle Temple Church, allowed college students to stuff backpacks with school supplies, paint faces, facilitate games, prepare food, and assist with registration. At Winthrop Elementary Magnet School, students weeded the community garden, set-up bulletin boards, and assisted teachers in the set-up of their classrooms.

The learning goals of the day included:

· Providing opportunities for community members and college members to build relationships and acquire an initial understanding of the City of New London and some of its resources;

· Deepening an understanding of local organizations and the work they do in the community;

· Understanding how college students are also residents of New London and community partnering is a vital component of the unique Connecticut College liberal arts education
